Poor harvests, industrial revolution slowed down by 1845, thousands unemployed
Revolutions took place against background of famines in Ireland
Louis Philippe assumed throne during July revolution, policies were far from revolutionary
France divided between Bourbonists and Bonapartism
Later on, riots in Paris broke out, Prime Minister resigned, king fled to London, new Constitution created
Belgian revolution linguist divisions in country, Karl Marx was excluded from Belgium
Overseas workers returning demanded new political order
Fighting in Switzerland occurred, liberal and protestant cantons demanded the seizing of Catholic church property, Jesuits expelled
Revolutions across Scandinavia, uprisings in Vienna, Prague, Hungary, Austrian possessions
Hungarian revolution failed, since they tried to suppress ethnic minorities, stomped out by Russian troops
German revolution followed example of France, since Germans wanted constitutional freedom
Those at bottom of social ladder wanted more terms
Political clubs demanded reform, formed throughout Europe, attacked Prussia and Austria
Confrontation in Berlin left 250 dead, King promised constitution
Napoleon staged his coup d’état to extend his power, declared himself Emperor Napoleon III
Revolution failed, but ideas of nationalism, republicanism, press freedom, manhood suffrage, rights of women in some places, thrived
Cost of life was extreme, 100k died in Hungary alone
Workers were discontent, bad harvest caused this problem
Link between liberalism, romantic idealism, nationalism
European conservatism surged
Britain wasn’t affected, prided themselves on political structures that could allow for political change without revolution
