Review Questions Flashcards
What are the four basic types of tissue
Epithelial Tissue, connective tissue, nervous Tissue, and muscular Tissue.
What two factors determine distance from the free surface to the basal surface in epithelial Tissue?
The height of the cells and the number of cells. The taller the cells and the more layers there are, the greater the distance.
What is the basement membrane?
The basement membrane is the glue that the epithelial cells secrete to attach the basal surface to the tissue below
Is the basement membrane vascular or avascular? How do the epithelial cells get oxygen and nutrients.
The basement membrane is avascular. The cells must get oxygen and nutrients through diffusion.
Which kind of gland has no cytoplasm in its secretion?
Merocrine glands. They work by exocytosis, so no cellular material is secreted.
What are the four types of connective tissue?
Connective tissue proper, bone, cartilage, and blood.
What protein is found in all connective tissue proper?
Collagen
Why do chondrocytes need a lacuna?
Because the ground substance in cartilage is firm. The chondrocytes need somewhere they can live. A lacuna provides that space.
Where in general will you find serous membranes? What does each type of membrane accomplish?
Serous membranes are found around organs. They lubricate organs so that they can move against one another. Mucus membranes membranes are found in tubes that open to the outside. They provide protection. Synovial membranes are found around the joints, and they provide joint lubrication.
An organ’s parenchymal cells are labile. If the organ is damaged, will it be as good as new once it heals?
Yes. Since parenchymal cells are the functional ones, this means that the functional cells can be replaced by mitosis.
In general are connective tissue cells parenchymal or stromal
Connective tissue provides support so the cells are stroma
