Review and Bond Types Flashcards
What is ionization energy?
The amount of energy that a neutral atom must absorb to release an electron.
How does ionization energy increase on the periodic table?
Up and to the right.
What is electron affinity?
The energy released when a neutral atom gains an electron to form an anion.
How does electron affinity increase on the periodic table?
Up and to the right (with many exceptions).
Is an anion or a cation bigger than its corresponding neutral atom?
The anion is bigger.
How does atomic radius increase on the periodic table?
Down and to the left.
Why does ionization energy decrease down a group?
Because the electrons are farther from the nucleus and experience lower nuclear charge.
In a molecular bond, the shared electron pair is responsible for which properties of the bond?
Bond length and strength.
An electron sea flowing between cations is characteristic of which type of bond?
Metallic bonding
The fluidity of electrons in metallic bonds produces what properties of metals?
Malleability and ductility.
In which type of bond are shared electrons localized?
Molecular bonding
