Ideal Gas Law and Partial Pressure Flashcards
What is the ideal gas law?
PV = nRT
What is the gas constant (R)?
0.0821 (atm)(L)/(mol)(K)
8.314 J/(mol)(K)
What is standard temperature and pressure (STP)?
Pressure of 1 atm and temperature of 273.15 K (0 C)
At STP, what is the volume of 1 mol of gas?
22.4 L
What is partial pressure?
The pressure exerted by each individual gas in a mixture of gases
What does Dalton’s Law of partial pressures say?
The total pressure in a gas mixture equals the sum of the partial pressures of each gas
How do you find gas density using pressure, molar mass, the gas constant (R), and temperature?
D = (P)(MM)/RT
How do you find gas density at STP?
(Molar Mass)/(22.4 L)
22.4 L = standard molar volume
How do you find the partial pressure of a gas from its mole fraction and total pressure?
Multiply the mole fraction by the total pressure.
