Reversible Reactions Flashcards
What is a reversible reaction?
Where the products can react with each other to produce the original reactants.
Describe what happens in the haber process
Nitrogen + hydrogen->ammonia. Nitrogen is obtained easily from air. Hydrogen extracted from hydrocarbons from sources like natural gas + crude oil.
How is the haber process carried out?
At 450°c which pressure of 200 atmospheres + an iron catalyst
What is a dynamic equilibrium?
Forward + backward reactions both happening at same time + same rate. Concentrations of reactants + products have reached a balance so won’t change.
What conditions are needed for a dynamic equilibrium to be achieved?
Reversible reaction, closed system so products/reactants can’t escape.
What 3 things affect an equilibrium?
Temperature
Pressure
Concentrations
