Ionic + Colvalent Bonding Flashcards
What is ionic bonding?
When a metal + non metal react together the metal loses electrons to form a cation (+) and non metal gains these electrons to form an anion (-)
How are ions attracted to each other in the ionic bond?
The oppositely charged ions are strongly attracted by electrostatic forces.
What is an ion?
An atom or group of atoms that with a positive or negative charge.
When does a compound end in IDE?
If just has a metal + non metal
When does a compound end in ATE?
Must have a metal, non metal + oxygen
What is covalent bonding?
Strong bond that forms when a pair of electrons is shared between two atoms
What are simple molecular substances made up of?
They are made up of molecules containing a few atoms joined by covalent bonds
What is the size of simple molecules?
10-10m
