Periodic Table Flashcards
How Mandeleev arrange the elements in the periodic table?
He based them on their properties and compounds
How did mandeleev predict the existence and properties of undiscovered elements?
He used the properties of other elements in the same column and he soon found they fitted the pattern which confirmed his ideas.
How did mandeleev arrange the periodic table wrong?
He thought he arranged elements in order of increasing relative atomic mass but wasn’t all true due to the relative abundance of isotopes
What does the atomic number of an element show?
The number of protons in the nucleus
How is the periodic table arranged with the atomic number?
Shows the elements in order of ascending atomic number
Describe how the periodic table is arranged
Elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number in rows called periods.
Elements with similar properties are placed in same vertical groups.
What does the group number show?
How many electrons are on the outer shell eg group 1 elements have 1 outer shell.
Which side of the periodic table are metals?
Left
Which side of the periodic table are non metals?
Right
What is the electronic configuration?
2.8.8.2
What is the electronic configuration of nitrogen (atomic no.7)
2.5
How is the electronic configuration of an element related to its position on the periodic table?
The number of shells with electrons is the same as period number. Group number shows how many electrons on outer shell.
