Isotopes Flashcards
1
Q
What is an isotope?
A
They are different atoms of the same element which have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
2
Q
What do isotopes have?
A
The same atomic number but different mass numbers
3
Q
How do you find the relative atomic mass of an element?
A
Multiply each relative isotopic mass by its isotopic abundance and add up the results.
Divide by the sum of the abundances.
4
Q
How does the existence of some isotopes result ins relative atomic masses not being whole numbers.
A
If an element has more than one isotope it’s Ar is the average of the mass numbers of all the different isotopes.
