Return to Work Issues and Job Analysis Flashcards
Functional Capacity Evaluation
FCE
provides a baseline of the patient’s physical abilities
FCE components (15)
- interview
- history of injury
- previous treatments
- previous diagnostic testing
- medical history
- client’s goals
- validity testing
- cardiovascular
- musculoskeletal evaluation
- dexterity
- mobility
- material handling
- work simulated tasks
- pain
- documentation
FCE - cardiovascular evaluation
monitor BP and HR throughout
*also monitor in relation to pain level (c/o pain should present w/ elevated HR/BP)
FCE - musculoskeletal evaluation (6)
- posture
- gait
- tenderness to palpation
- neurological exam
- ROM
- MMT
FCE - mobility (4)
- balance
- crouching/squatting
- kneeling
- climbing and descending stairs/ladders
FCE - material handling (5)
- floor - knuckle
- 12” - knuckle
- knuckle - shoulder
- shoulder - overhead
- carry
FCE - pain
take pre and post activity
questionnaires (Oswestry or McGill)
FCE - documentation (3)
- summary is very important
- comment on effort
- recommendations (RTW level/restrictions)
FCE - work demand levels (5)
- S - sedentary
- L - light work
- M - medium work
- H - heavy work
- V- very heavy work
FCE - Sedentary Work
- exerting up to 10 lbs force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently to move objects
- involves sitting most of the time
- may involve walking/standing brief periods of time
FCE - Light Work
*exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally or up to 10 lbs frequently and/or negligible force constantly to move objects
*requires walking or standing to significant degree
OR pushing/pulling arm/leg controls while sitting
OR requires working at a production rate pace
FCE - Medium Work
- exerting 20-50 lbs of force occasionally or 10-25 lbs frequently and/or greater than negligible up to 10 lbs constantly to move objects
- physical demands in excess of those for Light Work
FCE - Heavy Work
- exerting 50-100 lbs of force occasionally or 25-50 lbs frequently and/or 10-20 lbs constantly to move objects
- physical demands in excess of those for Medium Work
FCE - Very Heavy Work
- exerting excess of 100 lbs of force occasionally or excess of 50 lbs frequently and/or excess of 20 lbs constantly to move objects
- physical demands in excess of those for Hard Work
work conditioning
work related program designed to restore the patient function
single discipline
2-4hrs/day 5days/week
focus on strengthening, conditioning, work simulation
