Retroperitoneum Flashcards
Where is the retroperitoneum space?
-Posterior to peritoneal
-Anterior to transversalis fascia
(extends from diaphragm to pelvic brim)
What does the retroperitoneum include?
-Diaphragmatic crura (tendon)
-Pancreas
-Distal CBD
-Duodenum
-Kidneys
-Adrenals
-AO/IVC
-SMA/SMV
-SA/SV
-HA
-Lymph vessels + nodes
Is u/s the gold standard?
No, CT is
What are the 3 spaces of the retroperitoneal?
-Anterior pararenal
-Perirenal/perinephric
-Posterior pararenal
Where is the anterior renal/gerota fascia?
Anterior to great vessels, kidneys + adrenals
Where is the posterior renal/zuckerkland fascia?
-Fuses with anterior laterally
-Posterior to kidney
How are fascial planes fused/unfused?
Fused: superiorly
Unfused: inferiorly
What does the anterior pararenal space include?
-Pancreas
-Distal CBD
-Duodenum
-Colon
-Fat
What does the perirenal/perinephric space include?
-Kidneys
-Adrenals
-Vessels (AO + IVC)
-Fat
What does the posterior pararenal space include?
-Only fat (no organs)
What is diaphragmatic crura?
Tendinous fibers that blend in with the anterior longitudinal ligament of the veretrbal column
Which crus is longer?
Right (also more lobular)
What are the functions of the lymphatic system?
-Collects plasma fluid that oozes
-Collects cellular debris + bacteria
-Absorbs + transports dietary fat
What is chyle cistern?
-Collecting area in mid-retroperitoneum
-Collects lymph from lower extremities + pelvis before ascending to thoracic duct
Where are parietal nodes found?
Surrounds great vessels
(in retroperitoneum)
Where are visceral nodes found?
Found at the hilum of organs
(in peritoneal)
