Retrocalcaneal bursitis Flashcards
What is Retrocalcaneal bursitis ?
Local inflammation and pain at posterior heel or ankle .
The synovial fluid thickens which causes pain upon movement
What is Retrocalcaneal bursitis commonly caused by?
- Repetitive trauma or overuse
- Pressure, athletes wearing tight shoes
- Wearing high-heeled shoes on a long-term basis may experience increased stretch and irritation of the Achilles tendon
How does RCB develop?
Inflammation of the bursa due to irritation can cause synovial cells to multiple, therefore collagen formation and fluid production increases. The bursa becomes filled with fibrin rich fluid.
Is this condition common?
Yes
Clinical presentation of RCB?
Pain at posterior heel or ankle
Limping
Swelling may appear medial or lateral to tendon
What could we find on examination?
Pain on palpation and obvious swelling and inflammation
What may be the most important form of treatment?
Changing footwear.
Use of an open-backed shoe may relieve pressure on the affected region.
Encourage athletes to change running shoes on a regular basis,
