Retinitis pigmentosa Flashcards
1
Q
What is Retinitis pigmentosa?
A
It is a group of inherited conditions that that lead to progressive deterioration of photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelium structureand function
2
Q
What are the symptoms of retinis pigmentosa?
A
- bilateral and symmetrical
- Night blindess
- Decreased VF leading to clumsiness
3
Q
What are the signs on fundoscopy regarding retinitis pigmentosa?
A
- irregular retinal pigment clumping which is first noticed mid-peripherally then centrally and peripherally
- The retinal pigment epithelial atrophy produces depigmentation between the areas of pigment clumping
- Retinal aterioles narrow due to optic atrophy
- pale optic disc eventually because of loss of nerve fibres
