Orbit Flashcards
What is the orbit?
It is a pear shaped bony cavity with the optic canal as the stalk of the pear
What are the main conditions of orbital conditions?
- Proptosis or enophthalmos(posterior displacent of the eye)
- pain
- decreased vision
- diplopia
How does a benign tumour present?
It is slow and painless onset of proptosis
How does orbital cellulitis and rhabdomyosarcoma present in a child?
Rapid onset of proptosis in a chil
What could a rapid onset of proptosis in an adult be?
orbital cellulitis and pseudotumour
What is axial proptosis associated with?
Intraconal space occupying lesion like a glioma
Non axial proptosis is associated with:
exraconal space occupying lesion such as a lacrimal gland tumour
How can we measure the distance between the corneal apex and orbital margin?
A ruler and a hertel exophthalmometer
When there is increased ocular retropulsion it is :
suggestive of a solid tumour or thyroid ophthalmopathy
What is preseptal cellulitis?
Less dangerous than orbital cellulitis
It is associated from trauma or local skin infection
It does not affect eye movements and leads to peri-orbital tenderness and swelling
Treatment is outpatient antibiotics
What is orbital cellulitis?
It is more dangerous than preseptal cellulitis
Affects eye movements, diplopia, blindness, redness of the eye, orbital pain
complications include blindness, meningitis, cavernous sinus thrombosis
Treated with possible surgery,IV antibiotics
