Retinal signal processing Lec 17 Flashcards
Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP)
Genetic eye conditions that leads to incurable blindness
tunnel vision
Mutation of genes for rhodopsin
degeneration of rods and eventually cones
Age-related Macular degeneration (AMD)
Wet- abnormal blood vessels behind the retina grow under macula- leaking and damage retina
Dry- RPE and photoreceptors of the macula degenerate
-accumulation of drusen
-loss of central vision and acuity
Diabetic retinopathy
diabetes mellitus
Blurry vision with macular edema
vessels bleed into retina and block vision
Partial color blindness
abnormal red-green vision
Trichromatic vision
Normal
Deuteranopia vision
No expression of M opsin
Protanopia vision
No expression of L opsin
Tritianopia vision
no expression of S opsin- uncommon
On center/ off surround
Light in center- excitation (depol)
Light in surround- inhibition (hyperpol)
Excitatory- spot of light against dark background
inhibitory- dark spot against light background
Off center/ On surround
Light in center- inhibition (hyperpol)
Light in surround- excitation (depol)
Excitatory- Dark spot against light background
Inhibitory- light spot against dark background
On BCs
Depolarize in light
Hyperpol in dark
Off BCs
Hyperpol in light
Depol in dark
