Retention And Stability Of Complete Dentures Flashcards
Define retention
Resistance of a denture to movement away from tissue
Define stability
Resistance of denture to displacement by functional forces in horizontal direction
What is adhesion?
Physical attraction of unlike molecules for each other
What is cohesion and where seen?
Physical attraction between similar molecules
Saliva is cohesive to saliva which means when denture moves the saliva moves as a unit too
What is important for ensuring maxillary and mandibular retention with regards to the fitting surface.
Post dam seal on maxilla
Extending into retromylohyoid fossa (lingual pouch) for mandible
On both, engaging any soft tissue undercuts, so good surface dental must be captured
What can make retention difficult?
Atrophic ridges
Incomplete palate
Fibrous (mobile) ridge
Damaged alveolar bone
Gagging
Insufficient saliva
Lingual overhangs of teeth
