Implant Prosthesis’ Flashcards
What aesthetic consideration must be taken into account when placing a single tooth implant?
Gingival margin is blunter
Larger black triangle
Hard to achieve aesthetic if single central incisor for e.g.
Benefits / cons of a cement retained multiple tooth implant
No screw hole in tops of restoration
But
So retentive, extremely difficult to remove once on
And cement can set around margins, and cause inflammation and bone loss around the implant
Benefits / cons of multiple screw mounted implants?
Very easy access to screw holes for lots of teeth with an implant retained bridge / prosthesis
Easy to repair
But
Very selective with implant placement to ensure screw holes are not in aesthetic / labial aspects of the prosthesis
Give some specialist ways to aid denture retention through implant prostheses
Gold bar mechanism
Ball abutments
Locator abutments
CAD/CAM titanium bar
Wha are some common post implant tx complications?
Peri-implant mucositis
Peri-implantitis
Loose / fractured components
Late implant failure
What is my role as a GDP with implant patients
Oral health advice
Ensure patient can perform optimal plaque control
Examine peri-implant tissues for signs of BOP / calculus / plaque / pus
Diagnosis, if possible
Remove calculus and residual cement
Assign a risk level and schedule recall appointments accordingly
Perform radiographic examination when clinically indicated
Refer to an appropriately trained, indemnified and competent implant dentist
How manage peri-implant mucositis?
Radiograph to rule out peri-implantitis
OHI, ensure free of calculus / cement, ensure pt can carry out plaque control, assign risk level, measure probing depths and check for BOP or pus
Reassess at future visit
How treat peri-implantitis?
Radiographic examination
If significant crystal bone loss, refer back to clinician who placed implants
If not possible
Maintenance treatment
1-2 month follow up, if not better then refer to secondary care
