Benefits / cons of a cement retained multiple tooth implant

A

No screw hole in tops of restoration

But

So retentive, extremely difficult to remove once on

And cement can set around margins, and cause inflammation and bone loss around the implant

A

Very easy access to screw holes for lots of teeth with an implant retained bridge / prosthesis

Easy to repair

But

Very selective with implant placement to ensure screw holes are not in aesthetic / labial aspects of the prosthesis

A

Oral health advice

Ensure patient can perform optimal plaque control

Examine peri-implant tissues for signs of BOP / calculus / plaque / pus

Diagnosis, if possible

Remove calculus and residual cement

Assign a risk level and schedule recall appointments accordingly

Perform radiographic examination when clinically indicated

Refer to an appropriately trained, indemnified and competent implant dentist

How manage peri-implant mucositis?

A

Radiograph to rule out peri-implantitis

OHI, ensure free of calculus / cement, ensure pt can carry out plaque control, assign risk level, measure probing depths and check for BOP or pus

A

Radiographic examination

If significant crystal bone loss, refer back to clinician who placed implants

If not possible
