Restrictive Airway Disease Flashcards
1
Q
Name three causes of thoracic restriction outside of the lungs
A
- skeletal
- muscle weakness
- abdominal obesity/ascites
2
Q
Name six causes if thoracic restriction inside the lungs
A
- disease within the lungs
- fluid in the alveolar air spaces
- consolidation of alveolar air spaces
- granulomatous alveolitis
- alveolitis
- carcinomatosis
3
Q
What two areas can lung disease affect?
A
- The alveolar structures
2. Pathophysiology (impaired gas exchange)
4
Q
What are the two types of oedema that can occur in the lungs - explain the reason for these
A
- Cardiac pulmonary oedema due to raised pulmonary venous pressure
- Non cardiac pulmonary oedema - leaky capillaries, tight junctions do not function properly due to sepsis, trauma or travel sickness
5
Q
State three types of consolidation
A
- Infective pneumonia
- Infarction
- Other e.g. BOOP, drugs, rheumatoid
6
Q
Name two types of granulomatous alveolitis
A
- extrinsic allergic alveolitis
- sarcoidosis
7
Q
Define alveolitis and state five causes
A
inflammation of alveoli walls
- drugs
- toxic gases/ fumes
- pulmonary fibrosis
- autoimmune
- dust disease
8
Q
Name four causes of eosinophilic reaction and give specific examples
A
- drugs - nitrofurantoin
- fungal - aspergillosis
- parasites - toxocara, filaria
- autoimmune - polyarteritis
9
Q
Give six signs/symptoms
A
- breathlessness
- cough but no wheeze
- finger clubbing
- inspiratory lung crackles
- central cyanosis
- pulmonary fibrosis
10
Q
What is the treatment?
A
- remove trigger
- treat reversible alveolitis
- treat IPF - anti-fibrotic agents, oxygen, lung transplant
