Restoration Flashcards
Restoration
An active attempt to return an ecosystem to an earlier condition following degradation resulting from any kind of disturbance
CBD and most countries
Legally committed “as far as possible and as appropriate” to rehabilitate and restore degraded ecosystems and so stop the spread of invasive species
Must study the desirability of re-introducing listed species
9 Habitat restoration targets by Society for Ecological Restoration
- Contains characteristic set of species
- Consist of indigenous species
- All functional groups necessary for continued development and stability
- Physical environment capable of reproducing populations of species necessary for continued stability
- Function
- Integration
- Potential threats from surrounding landscapes
- Sufficient resilience
- Self sustaining
Habitat restoration toolbox
Look on slides
Re-introduction
Attempt to establish a species in an area that was once part of its historical range
Re-inforcement
Addition of individuals to an existing population
Conservation introduction
Attempt to establish a species for the purpose of conservation outside its recorded distribution but within an appropriate habitat
Assisted colonisation
Facilitation of movement of species to sites that are likely to become suitable
Restoration conclusion
Restoration less desirable than habitat protection
May take centuries
Often requires protection and re-introduction of species
Predators and humans
Large carnivore populations in Europe increasing due to conservation success
Human - wildlife conflicts need to be addressed through education
