3a 2 Flashcards
The alpine geographic region
mountainous areas
Refuge for large carnivores
majority are on mountainous area due to lower interactions with humans. Could live anywhere but for this reason they are concentrated here
Scandinavian mountains
Defined as areas above the lower fringe of birch forest. Covered by ice during last glaciation. Species had to immigrate from the south. Very few endemic species
Boreal (taiga)
Largest biogeographic region. Climate is cool and mainly continental. Dominated by conifers. Podzols and histosols are dominate here.
Large European carnivores still dominate. Most herbivores are domesticated
Continental biogeographic
2nd largest region in Europe. Continental climate, deciduous forest as natural vegetation. Fertile soils = Chernozols and histosols. Podosols in north
Main characteristic = large rivers
Atlantic
Closely interacting with the bordering Atlantic Ocean and North Sea. Climate = mild and humid with exposure to westerly winds
Atlantic Ocean limits temperature bringing in rain. Cambisols, histosols and podzols dominate due to high precipitation. Deciduous forest dominates. Biggest human interaction with most large animals extinct.
Low lying coastal areas are important to migrating birds
Mediterranean
Hot summers and mild winters. Partly arid conditions and winter rain minimum. Soils are low in humus but high erosion risk. Soils not as developed as north. Fire is natural disturbance factor. Short vegetation
Ideal world
Oak everywhere
