Resting Energy Expenditure Flashcards
What is the most common technique for measuring basal metabolic rate?
Indirect calorimetry with open circuit spirometer
What are the qualifications to run the test?
8 hours of sleep, no exercise 48 hours, no food 12 hours so our body isn’t digesting, need to be thermoneutral , dark , distraction free
What is the resting metabolic rate?
Similar to basal but not as strict , testing is 3-4 hours after light meal without exercise, only lasts 10 minutes. Not as accurate
Which is higher BMR or RMR?
RMR is about 10 percent higher than BMR because not a true low or resting level
What is TDEE?
Total daily energy expenditure, calories out. Comprised of resting metabolic rate (60-75) thermogenesis (10) and energy expended during physical activity and recovery (15-30)
What is the resting metabolic date?
Sleeping, basal, and arousal metabolism. Can increase this by putting on muscle mass because muscle uses a lot of energy. This goes on 24/7!
What is thermogenesis ?
Obligatory- ingesting, digestive, and processing food. Pregnancy, growth, and lactation. Facultative- shivering, exercise and diet induced as well
What is energy expended during exercise and recovery?
Occupation, sport, recreation. Recovery plays a role because it stays elevated for up to 48 hours after exercise
What is resting daily energy expenditure
Estimated using indirect calorimetry with the metabolic cart or with body surface area, in which we need to know basal metabolic rate
Why is knowing your RER at rest valuable
Because then you know what fuels your burn at rest so we can manipulate but we eat based on what we burn at rest
For the purposes of a pre-participation health screening and risk stratification form
Identifying individuals that have medical contraindications, recognizing people that have clinically significant diseases, detections of people that have increased risk for disease and ,recognizing special needs for individuals that may need for the exercise testing
What must we do prior to exercise testing
Instructions for the patient on how to prepare for the test such as what they can eat ,what to wear, medications ,and physical exercise before the test
What is the basal metabolic rate?
Minimum level of energy required to sustain vital functions in the waking state
