5
Q

What is substrate utilization

A

What are we using for energy. their range is between 0.7 and 1.15.it increases with exercise because of the increased need for carbohydrates we burn more fat at rest

6
Q

What is the difference between RER and RQ?

A

RQ is cellular metabolism it is similar to RER at rest BUT exercise it is not because it has a maximum of one.RER Can be higher than one because there is added CO2 in the body when dealing with lactic acid during exercise

7
Q

What are the four substrates That can be burned

A

Fat carbs protein and alcohol. we only burned protein with long distance running and starvation

8
Q

What kind of metabolic carts do we use?

A

Indirect calorimetry via open circuit spirometry because the air comes from the room.

9
Q

What is the purpose of the metabolic cart

A

To collect and analyze inspired an expired gas is in order to determine things like oxygen consumption , energy expenditure, and substrate utilization

10
Q

Why do we want the honeycomb in on the pneumotach

A

To smooth out the air so it is not turbulent we want laminar flow calibrated at 3 L

15
Q

Why do we use relative instead of absolute

A

Compare better relative to their body mass

16
Q

What is the difference between a max and a peak

A

Amax as high as we can possibly get. a peek would be done using a cycle or arm ergometer . it is not as high as we could go but as high as we can go with that mode of exercise . if we give up before we think we reached max we would call it a peek

17
Q

What is the best predictor of VO 2Max

A

The plateau and decrease is best . this is because a graded exercise test gets harder . heart rate should respond the same because workload increases but VO2 doesn’t

18
Q

What is the error in 220 minus age

A

10 to 15 bpm

19
Q

What is the substrate use when we are starving

A

First the car will go first which is called bonking, then fats ,then protein, then the muscles eat themselves

20
Q

What is stroke volume at rest and how high can I go

A

60 to 70 mL it can reach 200

21
Q

What if the heart rate plateaus

A

We should not expect VO2 to increase because the AV 02 difference can’t change and stroke volume already plateaued

22
Q

Why does RER skyrocket after exercise

A

Because CO2 to increases with lag affect and oxygen is decreased

23
Q

Why do we care about RER

A

Because in an aerobic athlete we want to go because of spares carbs and uses fat

24
Q

What is a calorie

A

A measure of heat
