Responding to the World Flashcards
three elements of emotion
physiological, behavioral, cognitive
Darwin- universal emotions
happiness, sadness, contempt, surprise, fear, disgust, anger
Adaptive Role of emotion
emotions are evolutionary adaptations to situations we’ve encountered over history
James-Lange Theory of emotion
J COMES BEFORE L
first comes the physiological response THEN the emotion is labeled
ex: get hot- must be angry
Cannon-Bard Theory of emotion
B/C basically the same
physiological and cognitive components of emotion occur simultaneously and then result in the behavior
ex: I am afraid because I see a snake… let me run out
Schachter-Singer Theory
S=S
you must feel an emotion and then analyze the environment in relation to the nervous system arousal cognitive appraisal
Limbic system
amygdala-attention and emotion, fear, facial expressions
thalamus-sensory processing
hypothalamus-neurotransmitters
hippocampus-long term memories, creating context
prefrontal cortex
left-positive emotions
right-negative emotions
dorsal prefrontal cortex- attention and cognition
ventral prefrontal cortex- connects with regions of the brain responsible for emotion
ventromedial prefrontal cortex-decision making and controlling emotional responses
Cognitive Appraisal
primary appraisal- evaluation of environment, if threat move on to secondary appraisal which is evaluating if you can cope with the stress
Distress vs eustress
distress-unpleasant stressors
eustress- positive stressors (graduating from college)
General Adaptation Syndrome
Alarm- sympathetic nervous system activation. Hypothalamus secretes ACTH, produces cortisol and adrenal medulla to secrete epinephrine/norepinephrine
Resistance- continuous release of neurotransmitters so you can fight off
Exhaustion- body can no longer maintain SNS activity
