Respiratory System Flashcards
Respiratory system
Works in conjunction with the circulatory system to deliver oxygen to the tissues and rid the body of carbon dioxide through the process of ventilation (breathing).
Main organs of respiratory system
Lungs and alveoli
Lungs
Responsible for gas exchange
Alveoli
Functional cells of the lungs where the gas exchange takes place
Diaphragm
Large, dome shaped muscle that separates thoracic and abdominal cavities.
Inspiration
Breathing in.
Diaphragm contracts downward while intercostal muscles expand the rib cage to create space for lung expansion. Air pressure within lungs decreases, air flows in.
Expiration
Breathing out.
Diaphragm pushes upward, the ribs push downward, lung pressure increases, air is expelled.
Thoracic cavity
Divided into pleural and mediastinum cavities
Pleural cavity
Surrounds the lungs
Mediastinum cavity
Area between the lungs; holds heart, trachea, and esophagus.
Right lung
Three lobes
Upper, middle, lower
Left lung
Two lobes
Upper and lower
