Gastrointestinal System Flashcards
Gastrointestinal System
Aka digestive or alimentary system. Three main functions:
1) Digest food (via paristalsis)
2) Absorb nutrients (through blood stream via small intestine walls for use throughout body)
3) Transfer waste material for elimination (large intestine)
Peristalsis
Involuntary smooth muscle contractions that move the food through the digestive tract
Digestive process
1) Mouth = chewing and swallowing
3) Esophagus = takes swallowed food to stomach
4) Stomach = initial digestion, gastric enzymes break down food
5) Small intestine = further digestion and nutrient absorption
6) Large intestine = solid waste formation
7) Rectum = elimination
Mouth
Chewing and swallowing
Esophagus
Takes swallowed food to stomach
Stomach
Initial digestion; gastric enzymes break down food
Small intestine
Further digestion; nutrient absorption
Large intestine
Solid waste formation
Rectum
Waste elimination
Teeth
Accessory organ; used to mechanically break down food
Salivary glands
Accessory organ; produce saliva to begin process of breakdown and allow for ease of transfer from the esophagus to the stomach
Liver
Secretes bile (needed for digestion) as well as metabolizes proteins, fats, and carbohydrates
Gallbladder
Stores bile secreted by the liver, which is required for digestion
Pancreas
Secretes enzymes necessary for digestion
