Respiratory System Flashcards
Name the structures in the upper respiratory tract
Nose
Naval cavity
Paranasal sinuses
Pharynx
Name the structures of the lower respiratory tract
Larynx
Trachea
Bronchi and bronchioles
Alveoli
What does the conducting zone do?
Conducts air to the respiratory portion and produces sound
What does the larynx do?
Allows us to produce sound
What is the trachea?
A large air passage way that leads to the bronchi
What do the bronchi and their branching vessels form?
The bronchial tree that leads air into the lungs
What is the glottis?
A slit-like opening between the vocal cords
What is the larynx?
A cartilaginous tube that surrounds and protects the glottis
What are the respiratory bronchioles?
The thinnest and most delicate branches of the the bronchial tree
What happens in the respiratory zone?
Gas exchange occurs
What structures are in the respiratory zone?
Respiratory bronchioles
Alveoli
Blood air barrier
What structures are involved in the conducting zone?
Larynx
Trachea
Bronchi and their branching vessels
Glottis
What do the bronchioles do?
Deliver air to the gas exchange surfaces of the lungs
What do the alveoli do?
Give the lungs an open, spongy appearance
What is the blood air barrier made up of?
Alveolar cell layer
Capillary endothelial layer
The fused basement membrane between them
