Respiratory System Flashcards
Order in which the air we breathe in goes through our body
Trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli
Where does the air we breathe in end up?
Alveoli
Where does air pass through before going to our trachea?
Nose or mouth
What are the names of the 2 two tubes the trachea splits into?
Bronchi (2 x bronchus)
Where do each bronchi go to?
Lungs
What are the names of tubes that bronchi split into?
Bronchioles
What are the names of the ‘small bags’ the bronchioles up at?
Alveoli
What happens at the alveoli?
Gas exchange
What is the area inside the chest containing the lungs, heart and all eye other bits called?
Chest cavity
What are the names of the 2 gases exchanged in the alveoli?
Oxygen and carbon dioxide
What happens in gas exchange in the alveoli?
Blood collects CO2 from body - takes it to lungs
CO2 moves from blood to alveoli
O2 from air moves from alveoli to red blood cells
RBC carry O2 around body - deliver where needed
Vital Capacity
The most air you can breathe in and out
Exercise - short term effects on respiratory system
Breathe quicker and deeper
Anaerobic - lactic acid - oxygen debt - repaid after exercise - continue to breathe heavily
Oxygen debt
Amount of oxygen you need to consume while recovering from exercise above the normal amount needed at rest
Exercise - long term effects on respiratory system
Chest cavity larger - muscles around get stronger
Vital capacity increases
Number of alveoli increases
Number of blood capillaries around alveoli increases
Lungs more efficient - more O2 to body
- more CO2 removed
