CV System Flashcards
What are the two main types of blood vessel?
Arteries and veins
What are the 3 main parts of the cv system?
Heart, blood and blood vessels
What do arteries do?
Carry blood away from the heart
What do veins do?
Carry blood to the heart
What is the main purpose of the cv system?
Transport oxygen and nutrients around the body
How many circuits are there in our bodies?
2
What is the main circuit in the body?
Body circuit
Oxygenated blood is..
Carried around the body in the arteries
What does the other circuit include?
Lungs
What happens in the other circuit?
Deoxygenated blood is carried from the heart to he lungs to be oxygenated
Blood then goes back to the heart to be pumped around the body circuit
Heart rate
Number of times your heart beats per minute
Stroke volume
Amount of blood each ventricle pumps wit each contraction
Cardiac output (equation)
Heart rate x stroke volume = cardiac output
Blood pressure
Force exerted by blood on walls of blood vessels
Systolic pressure
Blood pressure in arteries when ventricles contract
Diastolic pressure
Blood pressure in arteries when ventricles relax
Exercise - short term effects on cv system
Heart rate increases - increase blood supply to muscles
Heart contracts more strongly - increases blood pressure
Exercise - long term effects on cv system
Heart gets bigger and stronger Stroke volume and at cardiac output increase Resting heart rate decreases Blood pressure decreases Recovery time increases
Diet - what affect does eating a high saturated fat and salt diet have on your cv system?
Blood pressure and cholesterol leaves increase
LDL
Low-density lipoprotein
HDL
High-density lipoprotein
Which is known as he ad type? LDL or HDL?
LDL
What does LDL do?
Transports cholesterol to your cells
What does HDL do?
Helps get rid of excess cholesterol from the body
Why is having a lot of HDL a good thing?
Helps stop a build up of cholesterol
What affect do drugs, alcohol, smoking and nicotine have on your blood pressure?
Increase it
Deoxygenated blood is…
Carried back to the heart along the veins
