Respiratory System Flashcards
What is respiration?
Taking in on oxygen and removal of CO2
What is internal respiration?
Gaseous exchange between blood and body tissues
What is external respiration?
Gas exchange between lungs and blood
What is cellular respiration?
Metabolic reaction and processes that take place in a cell to obtain energy from fuel such as glucose
How does mucus aid respiration?
Moistens air to make it easier to absorb
How does nose hair aid respiration?
Filters out dust and pollen
What muscles are used for inspiration?
At rest:
Diaphragm
External intercostal
Exercise:
Sternocleidomastoid
Scalenes
Pecs
What muscles are used for expiration?
At rest:
None - diaphragm and externals relax
Exercise:
Internal intercostals
Abdominals
What increases the efficiency of gas exchange?
Number of alveoli
Number of capillaries
Thickness of membranes
Blood flow
What is tidal volume?
Volume of blood breathed in or out per breath
What is frequency?
Number of breaths per minute
What is minute ventilation?
Volume of air breathed in or out per minute
Frequency X tidal volume
What is inspiratory reserve?
Amount of air you can forcibly breathe in after a normal breath
What is expiratory reserve?
Amount of air you can forcibly breathe out after a normal breath
What is residual volume?
Volume of air left in lungs after max exhale
