What does the respiratory system do?
Bring oxygen in, remove carbon dioxide.
Why don’t most dust, pollen, and microorganisms reach your lungs?
It’s trapped by mucus before it reaches the lungs.
Name the parts of the respiratory system.
Nostrils, nasal cavities, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, alveoli
What contains the vocal cords?
The larynx
What does the epiglottis do?
Prevents food or liquids from entering the trachea
What do comes after the trachea?
The bronchii (singular: bronchus)
Where does oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange occur in the lungs?
The alveoli
What are the stages of breathing?
Inhalation
Exhalation
What is the diaphragm?
A dome shaped muscle that is used in breathing.
Which direction does the diaphragm move in exhalation?
Upward
What can you do to keep your respiratory system healthy?
Avoid tobacco and pollution Tread asthma Avoid respiratory infections Get regular exercise Maintain a healthy weight
What is asthma?
A respiratory disorder in which airways become inflamed and narrow. Wheezing, coughing, difficulty in breathing. Can be life threatening.
How many people in the US have asthma?
50 million, including 5 million children.
What is bronchitis?
An infection of the mucus membranes lining the bronchii. Causes inflammation.
What are cilia?
Hairlike structures in airways that sweep mucus and foreign particles.
