How much time should teens spend in physical activity every day?
60 minutes or more.
What body system receives the most benefits from physical activities?
The cardiovascular system. Heart pumps more blood with less effort. Capillaries increase, which may decrease blood pressure.
What effect does regular phyiscal activity have on your metabolism?
It increases your basal metabolic rate (BMR)
How does exercise affect your bones?
Weight bearing exercises make your bones stronger and denser, which may reduce the chance of getting osteoporosis later in life.
What are endorphins?
Chemicals the block pain messages from reaching your brain cells. Also cause a feeling of satisfaction and pleasure.
What are the five components of physical fitness?
Cardiorespiratory endurance muscular strength muscular endurance flexibility body composition
What is muscular strength?
The ability of muscles to exert force. Example: lifting weights.
What is muscular endurance?
The ability of muscles to work for an extended time.
What is flexibility?
The ability to move a joint through its entire range of motion.
What does a skin-fold test do?
Measure the top layer of skin to determine body fat content.
What are the five components of physical fitness?

What is aerobic exercise?
Ongoing exercise that raises your breathing rate and heart rate. Uses oxygen. Swimming, running, etc.
20 minutes or more improves cardiorespiratory endurance.
What is anaerobic exercise?
Intense physical exercise for a few seconds to a few minutes. Cardiovascular system can’t keep up with oxygen demand.
Lifting weights, push ups, sprinting.
Develops muscular strength or flexibility.
What is isometric exercise?
Exercise in which muscles contract, but little motion occurs.
What is isotonic exercise?
Contracting and relaxing muscles through the full range of motion. Pull ups, for example. Free weights.
