Respiratory System Flashcards
Mouth and nose
Oxygen rich air enters body, warmed
Trachea
Tube that enters chest. Allows air to flow from mouth to bronchi to lungs. Kept open by cartilage rings. When dust and germs enter, mucus lining traps the, cilia get rid of them.
Bronchi
Trachea split into two tubes=bronchi. Connect to each lung. Can divide further into smaller tubes that connect to alveoli.
Lungs
Main organs of breathing
Alveoli
Surrounded by capillaries where GE takes place
Diaphragm
- dome shaped
- enables breathing
- main muscle used for breathing
Asthma
Caused by allergies that inflame and narrow airways
Lung cancer
Smoking or severe air pollution
Bronchitis
Swelling of lining of bronchi due to infection, causes coughing, makes it difficult to breathe
Pneumonia
Infection in lungs, alveoli fill with fluid
TB
Infectious disease caused by the bacteria, Mycobacterium
Purpose
- supply cells with oxygen
* remove carbon dioxide
