Circulatory System Flashcards
Heart
- pumps blood throughout body
- 4 chambers
- top=atria
- bottom=ventricles
Blood vessels
Veins, Arteries, Capillaries
Blood
Carries various substances that can be dissolved in plasma
Blood travels from..
Heart to lungs
At lungs…
CO2 leaves blood, O2 enters blood=gaseous exchange
Oxygenated
More oxygen than carbon dioxide
Deoxygenated
More carbon dioxide than oxygen
One in heart…
Oxygenated blood is circulated to deliver oxygen to all cells in body, before returning back to the heart. At same time as it delivers oxygen, it collect carbon dioxide from cells
High blood pressure
Force with which blood pushes agains walls of blood vessels is too high. Damage to capillaries and several organs.
Heart attacks
Narrowing or a blood clot develops in one of the vessels that supply the heart with blood. Can stop blood flow, heart stops pumping blood
Stroke
Cells in rain are deprived of oxygen. Often occurs as a result of blockage in blood vessels leading to brain, or when veins rupture
Purpose
- transport blood with oxygen to cells
- transport blood with carbon dioxide back to lungs
- distribute nutrients from digestive system to cells
- removes waste products to be excreted
