Excretory System Flashcards
Urea
Formed when protein breaks down in liver
Kidneys
Filter blood to remove urea. Produce urine.
Urine
Excess waste and water
Ureters
2 ureters what ch cells connect each kidney with bladder, transport urine from kidneys to bladder
Bladder
Collects urine before excreting it during urination
Urethra
Tube that that connects bladder to outside and f body through which urine is excreted
Filtration
Blood passes through kind kidneys. Kidneys filter blood.
Absorption
Substances which are needed are re-absorbed into blood
Diffusion
Substances are transported in and out of specialized cells of kidney through this process
Excretion
When bladder has filled up, it used muscles to force urine out of body and through urethra
Kidney failure
- Kidney loses it’s ability to filter blood
- harmful or fatal
- kidney dialysis, machine filters blood
Kidney stones
- liquid intake is too low, concentration of solutes in kidney is too high
- small=stay in kidney, or move down to ureter to be excreted
- large=pain, may get stuck, bleeding, blocking flow of urine
Bladder infection
- common in women
- bacteria enters bladder and causes infection
- painful when urinating
Purpose
- remove harmful metabolic waste products
* prevent too much or too little water in body
