Respiratory System Flashcards
Gas exchange at a cellular level
Respiration
Process by which O2 is brought into the lungs and CO2 is carried out of the lungs
Breathing
Movement of air into and out of the lungs
Pulmonary ventilation
Gas exchange between the capillaries and the alveoli of the lungs
External respiration
Transport of O2 to the tissues of the cells and transport of CO2 to the lungs
Transportation of Respiratory Gases
Gas exchange at cellular level ; O2 unloading into the cells and CO2 loading into systemic blood
Internal respiration
Hollow spaces in the bone of the head
Sinuses
Helps to resist infection by filtering out foreign matter
Adenoids
Lymph nodes in the wall of the pharynx
Tonsils
Contains the vocal cords
Larynx
Tube structure with rigid rings of cartilage
Trachea
Surrounds each lobe and separates the lungs from the chest wall
Pleura
Line bronchial tubes ; carries mucus out of the lungs
Cilia
Smallest subdivision of bronchi
Bronchioles
Strong wall of muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity
Diaphragm
