Respiratory system Flashcards
What is respiration?
life process that uses oxygen to generate energy and carbon dioxide waste.
What is breathing?
Inhalation or exhalation of gases. During breathing oxygen diffuses into blood and carbon dioxide diffuses into alveoli.
What happens to the diaphragm when you breathe in?
it pulls down, ribs out and up
What happens to the diaphragm when you breathe out?
diaphragm pulls up, ribs in.
What is the alveoli?
air filled sacs at the end of the bronchioles in the lungs, surrounded by capillaries with very thin walls to allow easy diffusion.
What do the capillaries and alveoli do together?
exchange gases with the outside air to supply the blood with oxygen and remove carbon dioxide
What are the steps of the respiratory system?
mouth, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles ,alveoli
