Circulatory system Flashcards
What are the arteries?
flexible vessels with thick muscular walls that carry blood away from the heart
What are the capillaries?
smallest blood vessel, only one cell layer thick. Substances diffuse them through to the body tissues. They connect the arteries to veins.
What are veins?
made up of thin walls, one-way valves to prevent backflow. They carry blood to the heart.
What is the heart?
muscular pump that pumps blood to the lungs to pick up oxygenated blood and then pump it to the rest of the body.
What is plasma?
the liquid in the blood that blood cells contain. It moves the nutrients and waste throughout the body.
What do red blood cells do?
they carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and return carbon dioxide waste to the lungs.
What are white blood cells?
part of the body’s immune system they help the body fight infection and other diseases.
What does the circulatory system do?
transport gases, nutrients and waste
