Nervous system Flashcards
What does the nervous system do?
monitor and respond to internal and external stimuli
What are neurons?
specialized cells that pass messages
What is the central nervous system?
includes the brain and spinal cord, reacts to stimuli and sends messages to the body.
What are the three parts of the brain?
cerebrum, cerebellum and medulla
What do interneurons do?
they connect the PNS to the brain
What is the peripheral nervous system?
includes the cranial and peripheral nerves, each nerve has two different types of neurons. sensory neurons and motor neurons
What do sensory neurons do?
carry info from the body to the CNS
What do motor neurons do?
carry info from the CNS to the body
What is the somatic nervous system?
part of the PNS, controls voluntary responses, such as turning your head to a noise
What is the automatic nervous system?
part of the PNS that controls the involuntary responses, such as heart rate or pupil dilation
What is a reflex response?
response to an external stimulus that does not involve the brain
What does the cerebrum control?
five senses, talking , moving and thinking
What does the medulla control?
breathing and heart rate
What does the cerebellum control?
balance
