What is the digestive process?
process where food is broken into nutrients that are usable by the body.
What is the mechanical digestion?
physical breakdown of food into nutrients.
What is chemical digestion?
chemical breakdown of food into nutrients.
What is the villi?
small, finger like projections that line the small intestine to increase the surface are for the nutrient absorption into the blood.
What is the chemical digestion of the mouth?
saliva does the process of breaking down food
What is the mechanical digestion of the mouth?
teeth and tongue work together to physically break the food into smaller pieces (chewing)
What is the esophagus?
Long tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. Food is squeezed down the esophagus tube by smooth muscles.
What is the mechanical digestion of the stomach?
squishes and mixes food
What is the chemical digestion of the stomach?
acid/juices dissolve and break down food chemically
What is the chemical digestion of pancreas, liver and gallbladder?
secreate digestive chemicals into the first section of the small intestine
What is the chemical digestion of the small intestine?
digest juices and break all remaining food into pieces
What is the purpose of the small intestine?
allows nutrients to enter the bloodstream through the walls
What does the large intestine (colon) do?
absorbs water and food by leaving behind waste
What does the anus do?
removes the waste being stored in the rectum
