Respiratory System Flashcards
Name the parts of the respiratory system.
Nasal cavity
Pharynx
Trachea
Bronchus
Bronchioles
Lungs
Alveoli
What is the epiglottis?
A flap of cartilage on top of the trachea that stops food going into the lungs.
What is at the bottom of the trachea?
The bronchi
What is at the end of the bronchi?
Bronchioles
What is at the end of the bronchioles?
Alveoli
What do the lungs do?
Move O2 from air breathed in into the blood stream
Take Co2 out of the bloodstream and into the air we exhale
Describe the alveoli.
Air sacks of the lungs, they are elastic with thin walls and have tiny capillaries surrounding them to allow gaseous exchange
What in the nose protects against infection?
Tiny hairs called cilia that perform a sweeping motion to trap germs and dust
What are the intercostal muscles?
The muscles between the ribs
Describe inhalation and exhalation.
Inhalation -
intercostal muscles contract,
Diaphragm contracts and moves down to make chest cavity larger
Pressure in lungs decreases
Inhalation of air
Exhalation -
Intercostal muscles relax,
Diaphragm relaxes and moves up
Pressure in lungs increases
Exhalation of air
What is a healthy amount of breaths per minute?
12-20
