Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What is the purpose of the cardiovascular system?
Carries blood containing oxygen and nutrients around the body and brings carbon dioxide back to the lungs to be exhaled
Why does the left lung have less lobes?
To make room for the heart
What are the differences between veinous blood and arterial blood?
Veinous - is dark red and is not oxygenated
Arterial - bright red and is oxygenated
What are the two upper chambers of the heart called?
Atriums
What are the two lower chambers of the heart called?
Ventricles
What do Arteries do?
Take oxygenated blood from the heart to the body
What do veins do?
Take deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart
What are the main veins of the heart?
Pulmonary Vein
Superior Vena cava
Inferior Vena cava
What are the main arteries of the heart?
Aorta
Pulmonary artery
What is the difference between the superior and inferior Vena cava?
Superior - blood comes from the upper body
Inferior - blood comes from lower body
What is the purpose of the heart valves
To prevent the backflow of blood
What is a healthy heart rate?
60-90bpm
What 4 things make up blood?
Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and plasma
What do red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets do?
Red blood cells - carry oxygen and nutrients
White blood cells - fight infection
Platelets - clotting
What does the aorta do?
Carries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the body
