Respiratory System Flashcards
Body Systems Review
breathing
mechanical movement of air into and out of the lungs.
external respiration
gas exchange between the atmosphere and the blood, occurring in the lungs.
internal respiration
gas exchange between the body’s cells and the blood.
trachea
tube that carries air from the larynx to the bronchi.
bronchus
one of the two large tubes that carries air to the lungs.
lung
largest respiratory system organ in which gas exchange takes place
alveolus
in the lung, a thin-walled air sac surrounded by capillaries.
respiratory system structures
nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, epiglottis, trachea, lungs, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, diaphragm
respiratory system functions
exchange O2 and CO2 between
- atmosphere & blood (External respiration)
– blood & body’s cells (Internal respiration)
how does gas exchange occur
Diffusion: O2 & CO2 move into
and out of cells from
high to low
concentrations.
inhalation
O2 into lungs, diaphragm contracts and pushes down –
pulling air in
exhalation
CO2 out of lungs. Diaphragm relaxes, lungs deflate –
pushing air out
what protects against foreign materials entering the lungs
cilia, mucous, & nose hairs
