Integumentary System Flashcards
Body Systems Review
epidermis
the outer superficial layer of skin made up of epithelial cells
keratin
protein contained in the
skin’s outer epidermal cells that waterproofs and protects
underlying cells and tissues
melanin
pigment in the inner layer of the epidermis
that protects against harmful ultraviolet radiation and
influences skin color.
dermis
skin layer beneath the epidermis; contains
nerve cells, muscle fibers, sweat glands, oil glands, and hair
follicles.
sebaceous gland
oil-producing gland in the dermis
that lubricates skin and hair.
purpose of the integumentary system
covers and protects the body
structures of the integumentary system
skin, nails, hair
epidermis structures
epithelial cells, sweat glands, keratin, melanin, hair shaft
dermis structures
connective tissue, blood vessels, muscle tissue, oil glands, sweat glands, nerve cells, hair follicles, hair shafts
hypodermis/subcutaneous layer
is the layer of connective tissue below the dermis, stores fat and helps the body retain heat.
functions of the integumentary system
- temperature regulation [sweat and goosebumps, helps maintain homeostasis]
- vitamin D production [for proper bone formation]
- Protection [from micro-organisms, excess water loss, UV
rays] - Senses [info about pain, pressure, temp changes,
etc. to the brain]
burn classifications
1st degree: redness & swelling
2nd degree: blisters
3rd degree: Skin function is lost, no pain due to nerve
cell damage.
