Excretory System Flashcards
Body Systems Review
kidney
bean-shaped, excretory system organ that filters out wastes, water, and salts from the blood and maintains blood pH.
urea
nitrogenous waste product
excretory structures
Skin (sweat glands)- removes excess water, salts, and urea
Liver – converts nitrogen-based wastes into urea (less toxic)
which is transported in the blood to the kidneys.
Kidneys (nephrons are filtering units): Removes toxins (including urea), Controls the amount of fluids & salts in the body, Maintains blood pH
Ureter
Urethra
Urinary bladder
excretory functions (3)
- Removes metabolic wastes from the body
- Regulates the amount of fluid and salts in the body
- Maintains the pH of the blood
how do kidneys work
- Blood enters the kidneys & is cleaned by passing through millions of tiny blood filters (nephrons).
- Newly cleaned blood returns to the bloodstream.
- Waste passes through the ureter to the bladder and is eliminated as urine.
dialysis
Kidney failure results in waste products & excess fluid buildup in the blood. Dialysis provides a way to filter blood and remove toxins and fluid.
