Respiratory System Flashcards
process of breathing in and out
Respiration
process of oxygen moving from the atmosphere into the alveoli
Inspiration
occurs when O2 is exchanged for CO2 between the cells in the body and the blood.
Internal respiration
occurs when oxygenated air moves into the alveoli
External respiration
consists of the trachea, bronchial tubes, and lungs.
- These structures are also lined with mucous membranes and cilia.
Lower respiratory tract
composed of structures from the nose to the larynx.
- These organs are located outside of the chest cavity.
Upper respiratory tract

Bradypnea
Abnormally slow breathing.
Cheyne-Stokes respiration
Deep, rapid breathing followed by a period of apnea
Lack of O2 in the blood, seen as bluish or grayish discoloration of the skin, nail beds, and/or lips.
Cyanosis
another term for nosebleed
Epistaxis
Eupnea
Good, normal breathing.
Hemoptysis
Coughing up blood or blood-stained sputum.
Hyperpnea
Excessively deep breathing.
Orthopnea
Condition of difficult breathing unless in an upright position.
Dysphonia
Difficulty making sounds.
Rhinorrhea
Discharge from the nose.
Mucus coughed up from the lungs and expectorated through the mouth.
Sputum
An abnormal lung sound heard on auscultation, characterized by discontinuous bubbling noises.
- Also called crackles
Rales
High-pitched inspiratory sounds from the larynx ; a sign of upper airway obstruction.
Stridor
A whistling sound made during breathing.
