What is the nasal cavities job of the respiratory system?
- warms or cools air that passes through
- supplies moisture to incoming air
- air is filtered by hairs and mucus
What is the Pharynx?
- Connects the nasal cavity to the larynx and esophagus
- common passageway for both digestive and respiratory tract
What is the larynx?
Aids in talking
What is the trachea?
- Outer layer is made up of c shaped rings
- traps foreign particles by hair and mucus
What are the bronchi?
- Tubes that branch from the trachea
- have cartilage to prevent them from collapsing
- provides moisture to the air
What are the bronchioles?
Branches that lead from the bronchi to the alveoli
- composed of muscle
- can dilate and constrict
Alveolar sacs
necessary for gas and fluid exchange
- gases must dissolve in water before they are able to diffuse
lungs
Composed of spongy material
- R lung has 3 lobes, L lung has 2
- covered by the visceral pleura
Mechanics of exhalation
Intercostal muscles move down and inwards and diaphragm relaxes and moves up to normal position
Mechanics of inhalation
Intercostal muscles move up and outwards and diaphragm contracts to pull downwards
