Adaptations and Change Flashcards
Adaptation
a structural, behavioral, or physiological change that helps an organism better suit its environment, and live to see reproductive age
Structural adaptation
changes in anatomical structure
Behavioural adaptation
reactions or responses to environmental stimuli
Physiological adaptation
changes in the mechanics of an organism
Gene pool
All genes and their different alleles (form of a gene) in a breeding population
Mutations
change in the coding of one’s DNA. Sexual reproduction results in greater variation in a population. (can provide an advantage, disadvantage, or be neutral)
Selective advantages
A selective advantage is a characteristic that allows for a better chance of survival
Natural selection
as the environment changes, different characteristics are selected to be more favorable for survival.
