Respiratory System Flashcards
What is Cellular Respiration?
C6H12+6O2
The process by which oxygen and the food we eat , in the form of sugar (glucose) , is transformed into CO2 (a waste product we exhale), water, and energy (used by the body). = 6O2+6H2O+energy
What are the organs of the Respiratory System? (7 organs)
- Nasal Cavities
- Pharynx
- Larynx
- Trachea
- Bronchi
- Bronchioles
- Alveoli
What is the function of the nasal cavities?
Contains cilia (small hairs) that filter dust particles & bacteria, also contains blood vessels that warm the air & mucous to moisten the air.
What is the function of the pharynx?
Part of the respiratory & digestive systems, both air & food pas through it.
What two organs does the larynx connect?
Connects the pharynx to the trachea.
Why is the larynx made up of cartilage?
To allow flexibility & protects the vocal cords.
Where is the epiglottis found?
In the larynx.
What is the function of an epiglottis?
Opens the opening of the trachea when exhaling, & closes the opening when swallowing to allow the food to go through the esophagus.
What would happen if food goes through/into the trachea?
You would most likely cough & choke in order to try and get it out of your system. If not, infections may be caused in the bronchi or lungs. (Bronchitis & Pneumonia)
How do the vocal cords produce sound?
Our vocal cords vibrate when we exhale to produce/create sound.
Do women and men have the same shape of vocal cords?
No, men’s vocal cords are thicker and longer creating a lower pitched sound, while women have thinner and shorter vocal cords, which lead to having a more high pitched sound.
What is the function of the trachea?
A long tube made up of rings of cartilage to keep it open at all times and to give it strength. It is also lined with cilia that pushes dust particles and bacteria to the mouth and away from the lungs.
What two organs does the trachea connect?
Connects the larynx to the bronchi.
What is a Bronchi/Bronchus?
Trachea splits into two bronchi, one on each side of the lung. Made of cartilage, cilia, & mucous.
What are bronchioles?
Divided from the bronchi into smaller tubes (bronchioles), and end in a cluster of alveoli.
