respiratory system Flashcards
what are the two types of respiration
mechanical and cellular
what is the role of mechanical and cellular respiration
mechanical- process of inspiration and the diffusion of oxygen from the lungs to the blood and carbon dioxide from the blood to the alveoli
cellular- process in which cells derive energy from the breakdown of organic molecules in the presence of oxygen
what are the six main structures of the respiratory system
nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli
what is the role of the nose
let air in and use the chambers within the nose called turbinate bones to filter out any dust and other foreign matter. they can do this because the cilia and mucous within those chambers catch the pathogens that try to enter.
what is the role of the frontal and maxillary sinuses
they lighten the weight of the skull and which allows a large area of the skull to be used for muscle attachment and contraction. its also used for heat exchange and mucous secretion
what is the role of the pharynx
its separated into three parts called the nasopharynx, oropharynx and the laryngopharynx that each make sure that air and food goes down the correct hole to prevent fatal emergencies
