Respiratory System Flashcards
Name everything in the human thorax
trachea bronchi (left and right bronchus) alveoli ribs intercostal muscles pleural membranes diaphragm
What does the bronchi split into
Bronchioles
What are the microscopic air sacs called
Alveoli
What is the muscle between the lungs
The diaphragm
What happens when you inhale
The intercostal muscles relax and external intercostal muscles contract
What happens when you exhale
External intercostal muscles relax and internal intercostal muscles contract
Where does gas exchange occur
In the alveoli
What does exhaled air contain
Less oxygen
More carbon dioxide
Slightly more nitrogen
What can limewater be used for
Can be used to show the differences between inhaled (inspired air) and exhaled (expired) air. Then it immediately turns milky on contact with exhaled air
What happens when you exercise
Muscle cells respire
During exercise what happens to heart rate
More oxygen is absorbed into the blood in order to remove carbon dioxide
When we breathe out the diaphragm
Relaxes
Pressure in the thorax …
Increase
State the process on cells that uses oxygen and glucose to release energy
Aerobic respiration
What uses oxygen and glucose
Aerobic respiration
