Plant And Animal Cells Flashcards
what is the function of the cell membrane?
Controls the entry and exit of substances into and out of the cell
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
Where all the cells reactions take place. Cytoplasm is present in both animal and plant cells
What is the function of the nucleus?
Controls the chromosomes which carry genetic information and controls the activities. The nucleus is present in both animal and plant cells.
What is the function of the mitochondria?
Where a reaction happens. (Respiration) This is where aerobic reactions happen. Respiration releases energy from the break down of glucose. Present in animal and plant cells.
What is the function of the cell wall?
Contains cellulose a rigid external barrier that supports the structure of a plant cell
What is the function of a chloroplast?
Where photosynthesis takes place, contains a green pigment called chlorophyll to absorb the suns energy. Present in plant cells.
What is the function of a vacuole?
Cavity which contains watery sugary solution (sap). Allows the plant cell to take in water without bursting. Present in plant cells
What are the advantages of using a light microscope?
Can be used only to view living tissue
What are the disadvantages of using a light microscope
Low maximum magnification so can’t study all of the cell structures
What are the advantages of an electron microscope
Greater magnification can be used
What are the disadvantages of a electron microscope
Can only be viewed to use dead tissue
How do you calculate the total magnification?
Total magnification = eye piece magnification x objective lens magnification
Which cell contains chromosomes
Nucleus
Some enzymes break down large molecules into small molecules for example during
Digestion and respiration
Other enzymes build up large molecules from small molecules, for example
Photosynthesis
